The most common mistake is starting with five. Two months later you know nothing.

The most common mistake people make with Ayurvedic herbs is starting with five of them. Two months later they cannot tell what worked, what did nothing, and what gave them a stomach ache — so they stop. This guide is about starting with one.

First, the honest framing

Ayurveda is a traditional system of medicine from the Indian subcontinent, several thousand years old, built around the idea that health is a matter of balance and that the same plant can suit one person and not another.

Some of its herbs have been studied in modern clinical trials. Most have been studied lightly or not at all. Traditional use is genuine evidence of a kind — people have used these plants for a very long time and paid attention — but it is not the same as a randomised controlled trial, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling.

What to expect, realistically

These are not painkillers. Nothing here produces an effect you will notice within an hour. The traditional framing is that they work slowly and cumulatively, and the clinical trials that exist measured their outcomes after six to twelve weeks. Plan on two months before you judge anything.

Start with the question, not the herb

Do not start by choosing a plant. Start by naming the one thing you would most like to be different. Then pick the herb traditionally associated with it.

If your question is… The usual starting point Traditionally used for
“I feel wired and can't switch off” Ashwagandha Supporting a healthy stress response
“I'm bloated after most meals” Avipattikar Acid balance and after-meal comfort
“I'm irregular” Triphala Digestion and regularity
“I'm flat by mid-afternoon” Moringa Daily energy and nutrient support
“I want something for stamina” Shilajit Energy and vitality support
“My skin is dull” Kumkumadi Oil A topical oil for radiance
“Cycle or menopause support” Shatavari Women's reproductive wellness
“Skin clarity, from the inside” Neem Skin and internal cleansing

The five herbs worth knowing

1. Ashwagandha

Withania somnifera. A root, warming, classed as a rejuvenative. The most clinically studied herb in the whole system — reviews have looked at its effect on stress markers and sleep quality, at doses of roughly 500 to 600mg a day over six to eight weeks. It is not a sedative. Avoid in pregnancy and breastfeeding, and check with a doctor if you have a thyroid or hormone-sensitive condition.

2. Triphala

Three fruits — amla, haritaki and bibhitaki — combined. The single most widely used formulation in Ayurveda, traditionally taken in the evening in warm water for digestion and regularity. Properly bitter. Available as tablets or powder, and the choice is mostly about whether you will keep taking it.

3. Shilajit

A mineral resin that seeps from rock at high altitude, purified before sale. Traditionally used for stamina and vitality. Taken as a rice-grain-sized piece dissolved in warm water in the morning. It is the most counterfeited product in the category, so know how to check yours.

4. Moringa

A nutrient-dense leaf from a tree sometimes called the drumstick tree, where nearly every part gets used. Traditionally taken for daily energy and general nourishment. One of the gentler places to start.

5. Amla

Indian gooseberry. One of the more vitamin C-dense foods there is, and also one of the three fruits inside Triphala. Sharp, sour, traditionally taken as a powder stirred into water.

How to actually run your first eight weeks

1

Pick one herb. Only one.

If you take three and something changes, you have learned nothing about which one did it. This is the rule that makes the difference.

2

Take it with food, at the same time every day.

Most first-week stomach complaints come from taking these on an empty stomach. Consistency matters more than the specific hour.

3

Start at the lower end.

One tablet rather than two. A quarter teaspoon rather than a half. You can always go up.

4

Write down one line a day.

Just how you slept, or how your digestion was. Eight weeks is long enough that memory is unreliable, and a diary is the only way to see a slow change.

5

Give it eight weeks before you decide.

This is where most people fail. Five days is not a trial. A 100-tablet bottle is roughly three months, which is about the right length.

Four mistakes that waste the first two months

  • Starting several at once. Covered above, and it is the big one.
  • Stopping at day five. Nothing here works that fast. If you are not willing to give it two months, do not start.
  • Buying on price alone. Particularly with shilajit, where the cheapest option on the shelf is frequently not what it says it is.
  • Ignoring the label. If the bottle shows one milligram figure covering a blend of twelve herbs, you do not know what you are taking. The twenty-second check is here.

Who should be careful

Ayurvedic herbs are not automatically gentle because they are traditional. Some have real interactions and real contraindications.

Talk to your doctor before starting anything if…

You are pregnant or breastfeeding. You take prescription medication of any kind. You have a thyroid condition, a hormone-sensitive condition, or liver or kidney disease. You are due surgery in the next two weeks.

This is not a formality. Ashwagandha in particular has documented cautions around thyroid and hormone-sensitive conditions, and the NIH notes a small number of reports of effects on liver function.

What to buy first

If you want a single recommendation for someone starting from nothing: ashwagandha, in the evening, for eight weeks. It is the best-studied, the easiest to take, and the one with the clearest answer to “is this doing anything.”
