A saffron-infused facial oil, and one of the easiest products to use badly.
Kumkumadi oil is a saffron-infused facial oil that has been used in Ayurveda for centuries — and it is one of the easiest products to use badly. Too much, in the wrong order, on dry skin, and you get a greasy face and no benefit. Here is the version that actually works.
What it is
Kumkumadi taila translates roughly as “saffron oil.” It is a sesame-oil base infused with saffron and a group of botanicals traditionally used in Ayurveda for skin. Ours is a 30ml bottle with a glass dropper.
It is a facial oil, not a serum and not a moisturiser. That distinction matters because it decides where it goes in your routine.
Where it goes in your routine
The rule for layering skincare is thinnest to thickest. Oil is one of the thickest things you will put on your face, so it goes near the end — after anything water-based, before or instead of a heavy cream.

Vitamin C-dense Indian gooseberry.
Manjistha
A classic Ayurvedic skin botanical.
Lotus
Traditionally used for cooling, calm care.
Cleanse
Wash your face. This has to happen first or you are sealing the day underneath the oil.
Tone or mist, if you use one
Anything water-based goes on before the oil, while your skin is still slightly damp.
Serum, if you use one
Water-based serums go under oil. An oil on top helps hold them in place.
Kumkumadi oil — 2 to 3 drops
Warm the drops between your palms, then press into the skin. Do not rub or drag.
Moisturiser, only if you need it
Many people find the oil is enough on its own at night. If your skin is dry, a light cream over the top is fine.
Oil applied to slightly damp skin spreads further and absorbs better. Straight onto bone-dry skin, it mostly sits on the surface — which is where the greasy feeling comes from.
How much to use
Two to three drops for the whole face. That is genuinely all. The single most common mistake is using five or six, which will not do more and will leave you shiny.
Night or morning?
Night, for most people. Oil takes a few minutes to absorb and can pill under makeup or SPF, so an evening routine gives it the run of the night without competing with anything.
If you have dry skin and want to use it in the morning, use one drop rather than three and give it five full minutes before anything goes on top.
How long before you see anything
Skin turns over roughly every four weeks, and slower as you age. That sets the floor on how fast any topical product can show a visible change.
- Week 1–2: skin feels softer and less tight. That is the oil doing what oil does, not a deeper change.
- Week 4–6: the first point at which a change in tone or texture could plausibly show.
- Week 8–12: where consistent nightly use would show its real effect.
Put one drop on your inner forearm and leave it 24 hours before it goes anywhere near your face. This applies to any new facial oil, not just this one — and if you have acne-prone skin, introduce it slowly.

What pairs with it
Skin is not only a topical matter. Amla Powder is one of the more vitamin C-dense foods you can eat, and Neem Tablets are traditionally used for skin clarity from the inside. The Beauty & Radiance Bundle puts the oil together with Amla and Shatavari if you want to approach it from both directions.
