Same three fruits. The real difference is whether you will still be taking it in six weeks.
Triphala is three fruits — amla, haritaki and bibhitaki — and it has been the most widely used formulation in Ayurveda for roughly two thousand years. We sell it two ways, and the question we get most is which one to buy.
The honest answer is that the difference is not potency. It is whether you will still be taking it in six weeks.
The real difference
Choose tablets if…
- You know yourself, and a bitter drink every night is not going to survive week two.
- You want a fixed dose without measuring anything.
- You travel, or you take it somewhere other than your kitchen.
Choose powder if…
- You want to start low and build up — the powder lets you use a quarter teaspoon and work upwards.
- You want the traditional preparation, which is powder stirred into warm water.
- You do not mind the taste, or you actively want it. In Ayurveda the bitterness is considered part of how it works.
Triphala powder is genuinely bitter. This is normal and not a sign of a bad batch. Traditionally it is taken in warm water in the evening, and most people who stick with it say they stop noticing after a couple of weeks.
How to take either one
| Tablets | Powder | |
|---|---|---|
| When | Evening | Evening |
| How | One or two with water | ½ teaspoon in warm water |
| With food? | Either | Away from food |
| Starting dose | One tablet | ¼ teaspoon |
| Give it | Four to six weeks | Four to six weeks |
Both are traditionally taken in the evening rather than with meals, which is the main way Triphala differs from Avipattikar — that one is the after-meal formula.

Which do most people end up with?
Tablets, mostly — because the format someone actually keeps taking beats the format that is marginally more traditional. If you are new to Triphala and not sure, start with tablets. You can always move to powder once you know it agrees with you.
If bloating after meals is what brought you here, this covers the wider picture before you buy anything at all.
